Quick answer: if you want heatmap software at no cost, start with Microsoft Clarity, which Microsoft describes as free forever with no traffic limits and no sampling. Contentsquare, which replaced Hotjar for new accounts, has a free plan with 200k monthly sessions, and its Growth plan starts at $39 a month. Crazy Egg (from $29 a month, billed annually) and Lucky Orange (from $32 a month, billed annually) are the classic paid heatmap tools for marketing sites. Mouseflow has the widest set of heatmap types, including friction and attention maps. If you also need event analytics for a logged-in product, Mixpanel, PostHog and Fullstory include heatmaps next to funnels and session replay. Matomo is the pick when the data must stay on your own servers. Prices are as of October 2026, checked on each vendor's own site.
Heatmap software aggregates where visitors click, how far they scroll and where their cursor or attention goes on a page, then paints the result over a screenshot of that page. It answers "what do people do on this page?" in one picture, which is why it is usually the first behavior tool a SaaS team adds to its pricing page, signup flow or onboarding screens.
Most tools offer the same core map types:
A heatmap tells you where something happens, not why. Pair it with session replay to watch individual visits, and with an event tool to measure the funnel. Our roundup of the best session replay tools covers the replay side, and the user behavior analytics software guide covers the event side.

Who it is for: any team that wants heatmaps and session recordings without a budget line.
Pricing: Microsoft's Clarity FAQ says "Clarity is a free service forever" with no traffic limits and no sampling, and no limit on sites or team members.
Strengths: click, scroll and area heatmaps generated for PC, tablet and mobile by default, session recordings, AI summaries of heatmaps and recordings, and a chat interface for asking questions about your data. Clarity also has SDKs for mobile apps.
Limits: each heatmap is built from up to 100,000 page views, and recordings are kept for 30 days (favorites and a random sample for up to 9 months). There are no funnels across a logged-in product, and in regions that require it you need valid user consent to use recordings.
Who it is for: teams that want heatmaps, replays and on-page surveys from one vendor, and anyone who used to run Hotjar.
Pricing: the Free plan covers 200k monthly sessions for one project with replays, heatmaps, funnels and basic surveys. Growth is listed from $39 a month (shown against a struck-through $49) and adds three projects, zone-based heatmaps and heatmap summaries. Pro and Enterprise are sold after a demo. Source: Contentsquare pricing.
Strengths: hotjar.com now redirects to Contentsquare, which states "It's no longer possible to create a new account on Hotjar" and points new users to Contentsquare Free. Zone-based heatmaps group clicks by page area, which helps on pages that change often.
Limits: the most advanced analysis and AI features sit on Pro and Enterprise. Older Hotjar tutorials describe plans you can no longer buy; our Hotjar alternatives guide covers the switch.
Who it is for: marketing and growth teams that test landing pages and want heatmaps and A/B tests in the same place.
Pricing: all plans are billed annually and start with a 30-day free trial. Starter is $29 a month (5,000 tracked pageviews, 5 heatmap reports, 50 recordings a month), Plus $99 (150,000 pageviews, 75 reports, 1,000 recordings), Pro $249 (500,000 pageviews) and Enterprise $599 (1,000,000 pageviews). Crazy Egg says there are no overages. Source: Crazy Egg pricing.
Strengths: heatmap reports, recordings with AI analysis, and unlimited A/B testing, surveys and error tracking on its plans.
Limits: priced by tracked pageviews and heatmap reports, so busy sites outgrow Starter quickly, and there is no ongoing free plan.
Who it is for: CRO and UX teams that want more heatmap types than click and scroll.
Pricing: a Free Forever plan covers 500 sessions a month, and a 14-day trial gives full-feature access with 2,000 sessions. Paid plans are tiered by monthly sessions, with up to 35% off on annual billing; the plan prices load in the page, so check the current figure on the Mouseflow pricing page.
Strengths: click, scroll, geo, attention, movement, friction and interactive heatmaps, automatic friction detection, form analytics, funnels and journey analytics.
Limits: when you run out of sessions, tracking stops until the next monthly refill, and funnel counts and data retention grow only with the plan.
Who it is for: small teams that want heatmaps, recordings and on-site live chat in one subscription.
Pricing: on annual billing, Build is $32 a month (3,500 monthly sessions), Grow $72 (10,000), Expand $199 (50,000) and Scale $839 (300,000); monthly billing costs more, for example $39 for Build. Enterprise starts at 700,000+ sessions. There is a 7-day free trial. Source: Lucky Orange pricing.
Strengths: dynamic heatmaps, session recordings, unlimited surveys and announcements, live chat, conversion funnels and page and form analytics.
Limits: no free plan beyond the trial, and every plan is capped by sessions.
Who it is for: product and UX teams that want heatmaps connected to replay, frustration signals and product analytics.
Pricing: Fullstory Free includes 30,000 sessions a month and 12 months of retention. Business, Advanced and Enterprise are priced on request, and Mobile and Guides and Surveys are add-ons. Source: Fullstory plans.
Strengths: heatmaps, scroll maps and click maps sit next to session replay, conversion maps, funnels, page flow analysis and user segmentation.
Limits: no published prices for paid plans. See our Fullstory alternatives if that is a blocker.
Who it is for: product teams that already measure funnels and retention and want heatmaps in the same tool.
Pricing: the Free plan includes up to 1M events and 10K session replays a month, and Mixpanel lists heatmaps and clickmaps, rage clicks and dead clicks as available on Free, Growth and Enterprise. Growth starts at $0 with the first 1M events included, then is priced on events. Source: Mixpanel pricing.
Strengths: heatmaps live next to event funnels, retention and flows, so you can go from "users drop at step 3" to "this is where they click on step 3".
Limits: it is an analytics tool first, so page-level heatmap reporting is lighter than in dedicated tools like Mouseflow.
Who it is for: engineering-led teams that want heatmaps, analytics, replay and flags from one vendor.
Pricing: PostHog's docs say heatmap data is free to ingest. On the free plan, heatmap data is collected for up to 3 pages you choose; the pay-as-you-go plan allows all URLs and toolbar heatmaps. The free tier also covers 1M analytics events and 5K session recordings a month. Source: PostHog heatmaps docs and pricing.
Strengths: clickmaps, scrollmaps and heatmaps built on the same autocapture data as your funnels.
Limits: the clickmap needs autocapture turned on, and the 3-page cap makes the free plan a trial of heatmaps rather than a full deployment.
Who it is for: teams in regulated industries that need analytics data on their own infrastructure.
Pricing: the self-hosted Matomo core is free and open source under GPL-3.0. Matomo Cloud is priced by monthly hits with a free trial and stores data in Frankfurt, Germany; on-premise installs buy features such as heatmaps and session recording as paid plugins or bundles. Source: Matomo pricing.
Strengths: heatmaps and recordings that sit with the rest of your web analytics under your own control.
Limits: self-hosting means you run and tune the servers, and the heatmap feature is not part of the free core.
VWO (Wingify) includes heatmaps in its Insights product, but its pricing page now says "No fixed plans. Just a custom proposal", so it is a better fit for teams already buying its testing suite. UXCam has heatmaps for mobile apps and websites and prices on monthly sessions after a form.
Start with the question you are trying to answer. If it is "what are people doing on our marketing pages?", Microsoft Clarity or Contentsquare Free will answer it at no cost. If you also want to run tests on those pages, Crazy Egg puts heatmaps and A/B tests together. If the pages are inside your logged-in product, use the heatmaps in your product analytics tool (Mixpanel, PostHog or Fullstory) so the map and the funnel share one user identity.
Then check three limits before you commit: how many sessions or pageviews feed each heatmap, how long recordings are kept, and whether the tool masks sensitive fields by default. A heatmap only helps if someone acts on it. When a map shows users missing a key button during onboarding, an in-app tooltip or checklist (for example from PLG OS, our own product) can point them to it, and our list of UX design mistakes that hurt SaaS conversion shows what to look for first.
Microsoft Clarity is free forever with no traffic limits, according to Microsoft. Contentsquare Free (200k monthly sessions), Fullstory Free (30,000 sessions a month) and Mouseflow Free Forever (500 sessions a month) are the main free plans from paid vendors.
Not for new users. hotjar.com redirects to Contentsquare, which says it is no longer possible to create a new Hotjar account and offers Contentsquare Free instead.
A heatmap aggregates clicks and scrolls from many visits into one picture of a page. Session replay shows one visitor's session as a video-like recording. Most teams use heatmaps to find a problem area and replay to understand it.
Yes. Microsoft Clarity generates heatmaps for PC, tablet and mobile web by default and has mobile app SDKs, and Contentsquare, Fullstory and UXCam cover mobile apps as well, in some cases as an add-on.
