Quick answer: user experience optimization takes four kinds of tools, and most teams need one from each group. To see what users do, start with Microsoft Clarity (free) and move to Contentsquare, Fullstory or Mouseflow for deeper analysis. To test changes, use Optimizely, VWO (now part of Wingify, together with AB Tasty) or Statsig. To ask users why, run in-app or on-site surveys with Survicate. To test designs before you ship, use Maze or Lyssna. Several of these have free plans; prices below are as of October 2026, checked on each vendor's own site.
UX optimization is a loop: find where users struggle, form a hypothesis, change the experience, and measure whether it helped. Each step needs a different kind of evidence:
One change worth knowing: Google Optimize, the free A/B testing tool many teams started with, shut down on September 30, 2023. Google pointed GA4 users to AB Tasty, Optimizely and VWO, and AB Tasty and VWO have since joined together under the Wingify name.
| Tool | Job | Free plan | Paid pricing (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Clarity | Replay and heatmaps | Free, no paid plan | Not applicable |
| Contentsquare | Experience analytics | 200K sessions (5% replayed) | Growth $39 a month, billed annually |
| Fullstory | Replay-led analytics | 30,000 sessions a month | By request |
| Mouseflow | Replay, friction, funnels | 500 sessions a month | From $25 a month, billed annually |
| Optimizely | Experimentation | No | Individually packaged, by request |
| VWO (Wingify) | A/B testing and personalization | 30-day trial | Custom |
| Statsig (Amplitude-owned) | Experiments and feature flags | 2M events a month | Pro $150 a month |
| Survicate | Surveys | 25 responses a month | Growth from $114 a month, billed annually |
| Maze | Usability testing | 1 study a month | Starter $99 a month |
| Lyssna | Usability testing | Free plan | Growth $166 a month, billed annually |
Who it is for: every team, as a free baseline.
Pricing: free with no paid version; it records up to 100,000 sessions per project per day and keeps recordings for 30 days.
Strengths: heatmaps, recordings, rage and dead click insights, AI summaries and mobile SDKs.
Limits: no surveys or experiments, and Microsoft uses the data to improve its machine learning models.
Who it is for: teams that want to quantify which page zones and journeys cost conversions. It is also where Hotjar users now go, as covered in our Hotjar alternatives post.
Pricing: Free (200,000 monthly sessions, replay on 5% of them, one month of data access); Growth $39 a month billed annually; Pro and Enterprise by quote.
Strengths: zone-based heatmaps, journey analysis, a frustration score, error monitoring and surveys, with integrations for test variations from Optimizely and other testing tools.
Limits: no built-in A/B testing.
Who it is for: product teams that want autocapture-based replay and funnels.
Pricing: FullstoryFree includes 30,000 sessions a month for up to 10 users; Business, Advanced and Enterprise are by request.
Strengths: replay, heatmaps, funnels, journeys and private data excluded by default.
Limits: paid prices are not public and mobile is an add-on. See FullStory alternatives.
Who it is for: teams that want replay, friction detection and form analytics at a published price.
Pricing: Free (500 sessions), then $25, $109 and $319 a month on annual billing, with unlimited users.
Strengths: friction heatmaps, funnels, form and journey analytics, and NPS surveys.
Limits: tracking pauses when the monthly allowance runs out.
Who it is for: enterprises running many experiments across web, product and server-side code.
Pricing: every plan is individually packaged; demo or contact only.
Strengths: A/B, multi-page, feature and server-side testing with its Stats Engine, plus personalization and warehouse-native analytics.
Limits: no public pricing or self-serve plan.
Who it is for: marketing and growth teams testing websites without much engineering time.
Pricing: custom pricing with a 30-day free trial and no free plan; priced on monthly active users. VWO and AB Tasty announced in January 2026 that they were joining forces, and both pricing pages now lead to Wingify.
Strengths: A/B, split URL and multivariate testing, multi-armed bandits, sequential testing, personalization, behavior analytics and surveys.
Limits: quote-only pricing, and the brand change means some documentation still uses the old names.
Who it is for: product and engineering teams that ship behind feature flags and want experiments in the same tool.
Pricing: the Developer plan is free (2M events and 50,000 replays a month); Pro is $150 a month for 5M events.
Strengths: Bayesian and frequentist tests, CUPED, sequential testing, no-code visual editor experiments, feature flags and replay.
Limits: Statsig's blog says Amplitude acquired it on May 5, 2026, which matters if you also use Amplitude or want an independent vendor.
Who it is for: teams that want to ask users "why" at the moment of friction, on the website or inside the product.
Pricing: a free plan (25 responses a month, one active survey, up to 3 team members); Growth from $114 a month billed annually; Pro from $349 a month.
Strengths: website, in-product, mobile SDK, email and link surveys with many integrations.
Limits: response caps on lower tiers.
In-product feedback can also be built from components. PLG OS, which publishes this blog, offers a UX feedback survey component for React; its free tier covers 100 monthly tracked users and one component, and Starter is $49 a month. Our in-app survey tools guide compares the main options.
Who it is for: product designers testing prototypes and flows before development.
Pricing: Free (one study a month, five seats); Starter $99 a month; Enterprise custom.
Strengths: prototype testing, surveys, and on higher tiers live website testing, mobile testing, card sorting and tree testing, with a large participant panel.
Limits: one study a month on Free and Starter.
Who it is for: researchers who need many quick test types, from five-second tests to card sorting. Lyssna was formerly UsabilityHub.
Pricing: Free (unlimited quick studies, three seats); Growth $166 a month billed annually ($199 monthly); Enterprise by quote. Panel recruitment is pay-per-use.
Strengths: card sorting, first-click, five-second, preference, prototype and tree tests, plus surveys and interviews.
Limits: in-depth studies are capped on Growth. For moderated research at scale, UserTesting is the enterprise option (pricing by request).
A small SaaS team can start with Clarity for replay, a free survey plan for the "why", and a free experimentation tier such as Statsig's. Add Contentsquare, Fullstory or Mouseflow when you need funnels and quantified friction, and Maze or Lyssna when design changes are big enough to test before building. For practical starting points, see our user experience optimization examples.
They are tools that help you find, explain and fix friction in a website or product: behavior analytics and session replay, A/B testing, surveys, and usability testing.
Microsoft Clarity is free with no paid version and covers heatmaps and session recordings. Fullstory, Contentsquare, Mouseflow, Survicate, Maze and Lyssna also have free plans with limits, as of October 2026.
Google Optimize shut down on September 30, 2023, and Google pointed users to AB Tasty, Optimizely and VWO. AB Tasty and VWO have since joined together as Wingify.
Usually yes. Replay and heatmaps show where users struggle, and A/B testing tells you whether your fix actually improved the result.
