Quick answer: for event-based product analytics with a free start, Amplitude (2M events a month free) and Mixpanel (1M events a month free) are the main choices. PostHog adds replay, flags and surveys with 1M free events a month and usage pricing from $0.00005 per event. Heap, now part of Contentsquare, bills by sessions and is free up to 10K sessions a month. Pendo pairs analytics with in-app guides, free up to 500 MAU. Statsig (now part of Amplitude) is experiment-first, with Pro at $150 a month. Kissmetrics offers people-based analytics from $99 a month, Mitzu queries your data warehouse from $149 a month with no per-event fees, and Countly is the self-hosted pick. Prices are as of October 2026, checked on each vendor's own site.
Product analytics tools record what users do inside your product (sign-ups, feature use, upgrades) and answer questions with funnels, retention curves, cohorts and user paths. Unlike web analytics, which counts visits and traffic sources, they follow identified users over time, which is what activation and retention work needs.
The tools differ in four ways. The pricing unit can be events, sessions, monthly active users or a flat fee. Data capture is either tracked events you define in code or autocapture of clicks and page views that you label later. Some tools bundle session replay, experiments or in-app guides. And data can live in the vendor's cloud, your own data warehouse or your own servers.

Who it is for: product teams that want fast self-serve event analytics with a generous free start.
Pricing: Mixpanel Free includes up to 1M events and 10K session replays a month, unlimited seats and up to 10 active feature flags, but only 5 saved reports per seat. Growth starts at $0 and, for plans bought after February 2025, includes the first 1M events free, up to 20M events a month. Enterprise is quoted. Companies founded less than 5 years ago with up to $8M in funding can get a first year free on the Startup Plan.
Strengths: funnels, retention, cohorts, autocapture, session replay, experiments and feature flags in one interface.
Limits: Group Analytics for account-level B2B reporting is an add-on. Our Mixpanel alternatives post covers other options.
Who it is for: teams that want analytics, experiments and in-app guides from one large vendor.
Pricing: Amplitude Free covers 2M events a month and 10K session replays with no card. Plus starts at $0 with the first 2M events free (card required) and scales to 70M events, adding custom events, 20 behavioral cohorts, heatmaps and two-year data retention. Growth and Enterprise use custom event-based pricing.
Strengths: every plan includes the full platform (analytics, session replay, experimentation, guides and surveys) with unlimited seats, plus autocapture.
Limits: advanced behavioral exploration and SSO start at Growth. Compare it in Amplitude alternatives.
Who it is for: engineering-led teams that want analytics, replay, flags, experiments and surveys on one bill.
Pricing: the free tier resets monthly and includes 1M analytics events, 5K recordings, 1M feature flag requests and 1,500 survey responses. On PostHog pay-as-you-go, analytics starts at $0.00005 per event and falls with volume, with no minimums.
Strengths: each product has its own billing limit; pay-as-you-go raises projects from 1 to 6 and data retention from 1 to 7 years.
Limits: many separate meters to forecast, and PostHog states that self-hosted deployments are officially unsupported. See PostHog alternatives.
Who it is for: teams that want autocapture so they can define events after the fact.
Pricing: Heap Free covers up to 10K monthly sessions with core charts and 6 months of data history. Growth adds unlimited users and reports and 12 months of history, with an estimate after you install the snippet. Pro and Premier use custom session pricing.
Strengths: automatic event tracking, account analytics and an engagement matrix on Pro, and data warehouse integration on Premier. Contentsquare says Heap has officially become part of Contentsquare.
Limits: no public Growth price, and session replay is an add-on on Pro and Premier.
Who it is for: B2B SaaS teams that want analytics and in-app guides in the same tool.
Pricing: Pendo Free supports up to 500 monthly active users with product analytics, in-app guides, and Pendo-branded roadmaps and NPS surveys. Pendo has three paid tiers (Base, Core and a top tier for enterprises), all "Request pricing" on custom MAU volume. Its newer Novus product is free during an open beta.
Strengths: session replay from Core, and on the top tier NPS, PMF and CSAT surveys, Orchestrate, Listen and Data Sync.
Limits: on Free, going over 500 MAU stops you creating new guides, NPS surveys or segments until you upgrade.
Who it is for: teams whose analytics questions are mostly about experiments and feature rollouts.
Pricing: Statsig Developer is free with 2M events a month, unlimited flag checks and 50,000 session replays. Pro is $150 a month with 5M events included, then $0.05 per 1,000 events. Enterprise is custom.
Strengths: experimentation, feature flags, product analytics and session replay in one platform, with unlimited seats on the free plan.
Limits: Statsig's blog says it was acquired by Amplitude on May 5, 2026, so it is no longer an independent vendor. Our Statsig alternatives post lists other options.
Who it is for: marketing and growth teams that want to tie behavior to individual people and revenue.
Pricing: Kissmetrics is free up to 100K events a month with no card. Growth is listed from $99 a month at 500K events; Kissmetrics says prices are shown on an annual basis, 20% off the monthly rate. Above 5M events, pricing is set to your volume.
Strengths: autocapture, funnels, cohorts and activity reports on Free, with populations, a query builder and revenue, path, A/B test and people reports on Growth.
Limits: its pricing page lists no session replay, and the full report suite and integrations need a paid plan.
Who it is for: data teams whose event data already sits in a warehouse.
Pricing: Mitzu Analyst is $149 a month with 3 editor seats, and Team $749 a month with 10, both with a 14-day free trial and 10% off yearly. Every plan includes unlimited events, so there is no per-event pricing.
Strengths: funnels, retention and journeys on top of your own warehouse tables, with a semantic layer and AI agents.
Limits: you need your event data in a warehouse first, and extra editor seats cost $50 to $75 a month each.
Who it is for: teams that must keep analytics on their own infrastructure, across mobile, web and desktop.
Pricing: Countly Lite is free forever, open source and self-hosted. Flex, a private cloud, starts at $175 a month with a 14-day trial and usage-based pricing. Enterprise is on-premise with custom pricing.
Strengths: you choose the hosting region, and push notifications, A/B testing, surveys and remote config are available as add-ons on Flex.
Limits: on Flex, funnels, retention and flows sit in the paid Intelligence add-on (included in Enterprise).
June shut down its product when its team joined Amplitude. Kubit now positions itself as agent observability with an early access programme. Smartlook, which combined recordings with event analytics, reached End of Sale under Cisco on 31 May 2026. Google Analytics is free but built for marketing and web analytics rather than product usage. If you mainly need behavior recordings rather than events, see our session replay tools list.
Write down the three questions you most need answered, such as where new users drop out of setup or which features predict retention. Then estimate your monthly events, sessions and active users and price each tool on its own unit, because the cheapest option depends on how often each user acts. If you already pay for a warehouse, Mitzu avoids copying data; if compliance rules out SaaS, Countly is the self-hosted option. For the qualitative side, see our user behavior analytics software guide and our LogRocket alternatives.
Analytics tells you where activation stalls; fixing it usually happens inside the product. PLG OS adds onboarding, in-app surveys and gamification components on top of the analytics you choose, with a free tier of 100 MTUs and any one component.
Amplitude and Statsig have the largest free event allowances in this list at 2M events a month each; Mixpanel and PostHog include 1M events a month free, as of October 2026.
Heap, Amplitude, Mixpanel and Kissmetrics all list autocapture, so clicks and page views are recorded without defining each event in code first.
Yes. Contentsquare says Heap has officially become part of Contentsquare, and Heap still sells its Free, Growth, Pro and Premier plans, with Free covering up to 10K sessions a month.
Countly Lite is free, open source and self-hosted, and Countly Enterprise runs on-premise. PostHog offers a Docker Compose deployment but states that self-hosted deployments are officially unsupported.
Mitzu runs funnels, retention and journeys on event data already in your warehouse, with unlimited events from $149 a month.
